Together with Ericsson, Telia and Tieto, Luleå University of Technology welcomes you to this open test environment for 5G that can be used by companies, organizations, researchers and students. The 5G test bed is named 5G Innovation Hub North and is available at the Luleå campus in North Sweden. Here we are jointly developing ideas and perform different types of tests and experiments to validate new products and services.

Building on the long telecom tradition in Luleå
In 1989 the worlds first GSM phone call was made in a lab at Telia Research in Luleå. Luleå University of Technology and the Centre for Distance-spanning Technology (CDT) is now building further on the telecom tradition in Luleå by opening up for the 5G era via the testbed 5G Innovation Hub North. Östen Mäkitalo, “the father of the mobile phone” and CDT's former chairman, was one of the key people behind the first and the second generation mobile telephony, NMT and GSM. New digital solutions with 5G
5G will have a major impact on the industry and enable value-creating innovation in several sectors. Both public and private businesses have a lot to gain from the test environment and the opportunities for innovation that the 5G-testbed creates. The 5G test bed will lead to a greater and faster development and to build future digital solutions. The University has made major investments in research related to data centers, Machine Learning and Artifical Intelligence, and the 5G technology is a prerequisite to drive those investments forward. This installation is also an important contribution to the University's work to establish northern Sweden as an attractive test region.
”The 5G-testbed offers unique opportunities for innovation and business development. The purpose of the Wireless Innovation Arena project is to establish a research and innovation environment within the fifth-generation mobile networks where companies, students and organizations can test new ideas and applications."
Birgitta Bergvall-Kåreborn, Vice-Chancellor, Luleå University of Technology

"Luleå University of Technology has a clear ambition to be at the forefront of technological development. 5G has the capacity to reduce the obstacles that sometimes exist with great distances in the Arctic region, and I believe that 5G can play an important role."
Mats Lundbäck, Head of Business Innovation at Telia Sweden

”We offer an open environment where different partners can test and create innovations that will benefit the users.
The testbed can provide companies with support, advice and validation when developing new offers within the 5G area."

Karl Andersson, Test Manager, Associate Professor, Acting Executive Director, Luleå University of Technology
5G collaboration with University of Oulu
The testbed is further enhanced through a collaboration with the University of Oulu's 5G test environment. The two 5G test networks will be interconnected, the interconnection will enable cross-border testing and increase the overall testing possibilities in the 5G networks. In addition to scientific experiments, the industry will also benefit from the improved test environment. Through collaboration and partnerships, the companies should be able to offer competitive, innovative and high quality products, services and solutions within the 5G area. The aim is to make the partners constitute a powerful Arctic 5G node that attracts large-scale research and development projects within 5G.

Managed by the project Wireless Innovation Arena
The test environment is managed by the project Wireless Innovation Arena at Luleå University of Technology and the Center for Distance-Spanning Technology (CDT). CDT has a long history of successful projects in mobile communications. Several research groups will connect to the 5G project, both technical research and research focusing on involvement of end users in innovation processes.
